Many surveys related to open science, open data, and open access have been developed over the years. We've been sorting and comparing the questions and are developing a databank of pre-existing survey questions that can be used for future surveys about data sharing practices. A Google Sheet is available where you can view the process of comparison.

Previous open science/data surveys

Global Consultation on Open Science

The survey is designed to collect inputs for the development of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science. This survey forms part of a broader process of input gathering that includes online consultations, regional and thematic meetings and numerous debates on implications, benefits and challenges of Open Science across the globe.

The digital practices of researchers in France

The project was initiated by the Committee for Open Science. Its aim is to better understand how researchers use digital tools and research data in French scientific communities.

The State of Open Data

The 2019 State of Open Data report examines attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data. The study is a collaboration between Figshare, Digital Science, and Springer Nature.

The State of Open Data

The 2018 State of Open Data report examines attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data. The study is a collaboration between Figshare, Digital Science, and Springer Nature.

The State of Open Data

The 2017 State of Open Data report examines attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data. The study is a collaboration between Figshare, Digital Science, and Springer Nature.

The 2016 State of Open Data report examines attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data. The study is a collaboration between Figshare, Digital Science, and Springer Nature.

Open data - The researcher perspective

The Open Data report is a result of a year-long, co-conducted study between Elsevier and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), part of Leiden University, the Netherlands. The study is based on a complementary methods approach consisting of a quantitative analysis of bibliometric and publication data, a global survey of 1,200 researchers and three case studies including in-depth interviews with key individuals involved in data collection, analysis and deposition in the fields of soil science, human genetics and digital humanities.

Towards Open Research - Practices, experiences, barriers & opportunities

This study was commissioned by Wellcome Trust and investigated researchers' attitudes and behaviours towards open reesarch, examined the sharing and reuse of research data, code, and open access publications, in order to identify practical actions the Wellcome Trust could take to remove or mitigate barriers and maximise the opportunities for practicing open science.

Wiley Open Science Researcher Insights

In September 2016, Wiley contacted approximately 55,000 of their authors across many disciplines and received more than 4,600 responses. The survey effort focused on Open Science, broadly aiming to help them understand how researchers approach open access requirements, manage data, and participate in the sharing and archiving of their research.

Daily Research Challenges in African Laboratories

This study was performed by researchers from University of Witwatersrand (South Africa) and NEPAD-SANBio and funded through the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications. The survey interrogated not only perceptions of data sharing amongst LMIC scientists, but also how these are connected to the research environments and daily challenges experienced by them.

User requirements for national research and education networks for research in West and Central Africa

In 2015 the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN) conducted a survey to attempt to discover what NREN services are wanted by end users with respect to developing an NREN services roadmap in the region. This work was partly supported by the H2020 TransAfrican Network Development (TANDEM) and the H2020 Energising Scientific Endeavour Through Science Gateways and e-infrastructures in Africa (Sci-GaIA) projects.

Obstacles to the adoption of open access and open science - data from a survey of researchers and students in Francophone Africa and Haiti

The SOHA project, launched in 2015, designed an online survey to understand the potential opportunities and barriers for the uptake of fair open science in French-Speaking Haiti/Africa.

Innovations in scholarly communication survey

The survey asked about tool usage for 17 research activities and stance about open access and open science. It was created by Bianca Kramer and Jeroen Bosman from Utrecht University.

Open Data in Global Environmental Research

The Belmont Forum’s survey on Open Data targeted the global environmental research and data infrastructure community. It highlights users’ perceptions of the term “open data”, expectations of infrastructure functionalities, and barriers and enablers for the sharing of data.

Changes in data sharing and data reuse practices and perceptions among scientists worldwide

In this study the DataONE Usability and Assessment working group addresses two primary goals... To examine the current state of data sharing and reuse perceptions and practices among research scientists as they compare to the 2009/2010 baseline study, and to examine differences in practices and perceptions across age groups, geographic regions, and subject disciplines.
